Running For Second Vice President

Speech

As a dedicated member of the Durham Occasional Teachers’ Local, my commitment to advocacy, experience in education, and leadership qualities uniquely qualify me for the position of Second Vice President. My involvement in executive committees and chairing the Equity & Status of Women Committee demonstrates my dedication to fostering inclusivity and representation within our local.

As Second Vice President, through collaborative initiatives and proactive engagement, I aim to enhance support systems for our members and strengthen our collective voice.

I pledge to:

1. Continue working within our Professional Learning committee to coordinate targeted workshops and resources to support professional growth.

2. Continue to work within our executive committee to provide regular forums for members to share experiences, resources, and best practices, fostering an environment of continued solidarity and collaboration.

As Second Vice President, I will continue to champion our rights, Occasional Teachers’ rights and professional needs in Durham Region (DDSB).

Bio

Iyanuoluwa is an educator and advocate with over a decade of teaching experience. She completed her undergraduate and Master of Education at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa. She lived in Oshawa and Ajax for most of her educational career, and her relationship with occasional teachers/teachers in DDSB started with her first placement at Cartwright Central Public School in Blackstock (North Durham).

She taught in YRDSB (OT & Permanent) but continued to work with students, educators, and families in the Durham Region. During the pandemic, the treatment of teachers, especially Occasional Teachers, influenced her decision to leave permanency and join DDSB to advocate for the rights of OTs. Over the past two-plus years, she has worked alongside the executive members, first as an annual meeting delegate, then as an executive member-at-large, chairing the Equity & Status of Women Committee, and contributing as a Professional Learning Committee member, among other responsibilities.
